Chapter 17
MAYA
Maya was due home by five on Wednesday night, but even with getting off early, she was still stuck in the most horrendous traffic she had encountered in a solid week. Oh, no. Her sister had a study group at six, and her mother was working late. Maya was the only one available to watch Juanita until either Solana or Hermosa returned home, and Maya would be lucky to be there by twenty after five!
As soon as she whipped into her parking space, she honked her horn, alerting anyone who was inside that she was home for the evening. Her sisterâs car was still parked on the street. Guilt swelled in Mayaâs chest as she got out of her car and hoped Solana wouldnât be late to her study session in West Hollywood, perhaps the most inconvenient place for the off-campus students of Lakewood University to meet at that time of night.
Not until she reached the front door did she realize an unfamiliar white car was parked in Hermosaâs usual spot by the street. Huh⦠Possibly, it was a guest of the neighborâs, who were occasionally known to park in the wrong spot.
Maya went to open the door. It was already unlocked.
ââ¦These medications have to be taken with food.â Solana held up two brown pill bottles to a middle-aged woman in patterned scrubs. âShe eats dinner around six and either hangs out in the living room watching TV or goes straight to her room. This is the time you really have to watch her, though. We tend to be so distracted that itâs not unusual for her to get out, if you know what I mean.â
âNo worries,â said the woman with frizzy hair pulled back with a plastic clasp. âIâm well-aware of what happens when the sunsetting arrives. I used to work at His Mercy Memory Care. Do you have any locks I should know about? How about a security system?â
Maya stepped forward, putting down her bag and looking between her sister and the guest. âWhatâs going on here?â she asked.
âMaya!â Solana was all smiles as she held up their grandmotherâs pill bottles. âYouâre home! What happened? Traffic?â
âItâs brutal out there. You better get going soon if you wanna make it to your study group on time.â She kept one eye on the nurse standing in the living room. âIâm sorry, who are you?â
âYolanda Cruz.â The woman extended her hand and gave Mayaâs a sturdy shake. âIâm the nurse your family hired to watch over your grandmother on the weekdays. One of my coworkers will be here on the weekends and occasionally swap shifts with me as necessary.â
âNurse? Our family?â No matter how much Maya said those words, they didnât make any sense. âSince when were we hiring a nurse?â she asked her sister. âWho is paying for this?â
Yolanda held up her hands. âIâm going to go investigate the bathroom situation while you two discuss this.â
Solana didnât wait for Yolanda to be out of earâs reach before saying, âIsnât it awesome? This woman showed up this afternoon! Can you believe it?â
âNo,â Maya said.
